Distance/Time

18 km.     About 5 hours.

Peaks

Creag a' Mhadaidh, 612 m, NN 634 650.    OS sheet 42.

Introduction

This is a relatively easy day with an estate track taking one to the foot of the hill, only about 150 m below the summit, then an ATV track taking one about halfway to the summit. On a clear day, there are excellent views to Beinn Mholach, Beinn a' Chuallaich and even Schiehallion.

Route

(1) Walk up the track to Annat where a sign directs you past the farm onto a grassy track. Follow this up, alongside a wall, until the track appears to end. It actually goes right and passes between two walls for a short distance before turning left and heading N. Further on , it crosses the Annat Burn, which may necessitate a detour after heavy rain, then heads towards an obvious plantation where it goes left and passes in front of the trees. The track becomes much improved about here. Continue W, past the plantation, and go over a brow then follow the track, NW, towards the second plantation. The track from Craiganour is joined and this track heads N. About 3 km from the junction, there is a wide “layby” on both sides of the track. A faint ATV track goes E from the right hand layby. In clear weather, the ATV track will have been obvious for some time, climbing up onto the S flank of Creag a' Mhadaidh. Follow the ATV track, boggy in places up onto the S flank then leave it when it levels out. Head N over slightly rough ground and gain the crest. It is likely that the summit will off to your right, E, so head along the ill-defined crest (navigation could be difficult in mist) to reach the small cairn which is the summit of Creag a' Mhadaidh, 612 m. It seems to be the only cairn on the crest.

(2) Retrace the outward route.
