OS Outdoor Leisure 24: White Peak

Introduction

This is a short walk in the White Peak although the rock is more in keeping with the Dark Peak! The path below the edge gives reasonable views of the edge and its cliffs. Once these are passed, an easy path leads up to the trig point on the ridge then an easy path along the top of the edge. The descent off the edge is steep and rough but short.

Route

(1) Walk out of the car park and continue up the minor road. The path to Birchen Edge starts a little way up the road and soon leads to a gate then some gentle steps. Follow the path and soon the cliffs of the edge will be seen. A little further and Nelson's Monument will be seen. The cliffs soon run out so look for a large boulder on the left of the path. Turn right and follow an easy path which slants back and climbs up on to the edge, emerging at the trig point.

(2) Walk S along the top of the edge on a fairly obvious path bearing in mind there are long drops over the cliffs. Reach Nelson's Monument on the edge of the cliffs then the Three Ships (large boulders) on the left. Continue along the edge until the path goes right and drops steeply and roughly to rejoin the outward path which leads back to the start.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 19th January, 2019.
