2. Tennant Gill to Halton Gill to Stainforth Road

Start/Finish

Close to the entrance for Tennant Gill Farm at SD 884 691. It is usually possible to park on grass verges close by. The road to Tennant Gill is the road from Malham to Arncliffe and it is quite a minor road. In winter it can be impassable. The finish is on the Stainforth to Halton Gill road, also known as Silverdale Road, at SD 853 724. Note that older maps don't have the Pennine Way meeting Silverdale Road at this point!

Distance/Time

6 km.    About 2 hours.

Peaks

No peaks as this is mainly a moorland walk but the highest point is about 600 m.

Introduction

This is essentially a moorland walk which goes around the east and north side of Fountains Fell. The path is easy to follow, even in mist, when not hidden by snow and boggy sections are few and short. There are typical moorland views but the finest view is of Pen-y-Ghent as one descends towards Silverdale Road.

Route

(1) Walk down the track towards Tennant Gill and follow it, signed, past the farm then uphill on a rougher track. Cross a wall then go left, signed, before turning right at another sign. The path is very obvious from here and has had much work done to improve it. It winds its way over the E flank of Fountains Fell, gradually gaining height and passing through a second wall. The highest point is about where there are some prominent cairns off to the right, east. There is another wall soon after where the descent to Silverdale Road begins.

(2) Follow the rougher path down from the wall, crossing a few minor streams and passing a broken cliff on the left. Continue down to where the path swings right to follow a wall down to Silverdale Road.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 6th February, 2019.
