Introduction

Skellingthorpe Old Wood is one of the largest woodlands in the area and is relatively quiet to walk around. It contains a mixture of good tracks, boggy tracks and many footpaths. Boots are needed and gaiters after wet weather. The wood is very natural and, in March, white wood anemones abound. There is much to explore in this wood. Brambles may be a problem in places during the summer.

Route

(1) Walk down the private road from the five way junction. This is a long straight road almost to its end where it meets the back road from Skellingthorpe to Saxilby. To begin with, it is a track but after a while becomes a tarmac road. The road passes a selection of houses, many of them large. Pass The Larches (large house) just before the road joins the back road. There is a sign post here directing one alongside The Larches on a wide grassy strip between the house and a very large field.

(2) Follow the edge of the wood (on the left) past the houses and continue. Shortly after passing some outbuildings inside the wood on your left, reach a sign and a bridge where the path enters the wood. The path is easy to follow but brambles may be a problem in the summer. Follow the path to where it meets a bridleway and signpost. Turn left onto the bridleway and follow it back to the start.
