Walk 1 Doddington Kennel Lane Ash Lound Wood Sustrans

Walk 1  Doddington  Kennel Lane  Ash Lound Wood  Sustrans

Start/Finish

Car park opposite Doddington Hall which is free and usually open. If not, there is limited parking in Kennel Lane but bear in mind that a tractor may have to pass where your car is parked! Doddington is on the B1190 which leaves the Lincoln bypass (about 2 miles) at the Doddington roundabout; it is about 3 miles from the other end of the B1190 which leaves the Lincoln to Gainsborough road about half a mile east of the traffic lights at Drinsey Nook.

Distance/Time

3 km/2 miles      About 1 hour

Introduction

This route goes down a short tarmac road which becomes a track then a footpath before branching off into the wood known as Ash Lound where the path can be overgrown and difficult to follow but it is still possible to follow until it leaves the wood at a gate onto the sustrans track back to Doddington. In summer, the path in Ash Lound has both nettles and brambles in places so shorts may not be a good idea! Doddington Hall (Elizabethan) and its adjacent facilities are well worth a look whilst you are here. Ash Lound is certainly a wild wood and the path may not be a right of way but there are no signs asking people to keep out.

Route

(1) From the car park opposite Doddington Hall, come out onto the main road and turn right, towards the church. At the church, turn right into Kennel Lane. You will soon see the metal gate where the sustrans track returns you to but don't go through it. Instead, follow Kennel Lane, past the houses, and continue when it becomes a track. As you get nearer and nearer to the edge of Ash Lound Wood (going left), the track becomes a path. When you are just inside the wood, look for a faint path going left; it is even fainter in the summer but soon becomes a bit more obvious.

(2) Follow the path, overgrown in places. It curves left after a while, to go deeper into the wood, and needs care to follow but it eventually meets an obvious rough track on the far edge of the wood. Turn left here and quickly reach a metal gate which leads to the sustrans track. Go straight on (right goes to the main sustrans track which goes to Skellingthorpe and Lincoln) and follow the sustrans track back to the gate on Kennel Lane then back to the car park.
