Fiarach

Fiarach from Dalrigh near Tyndrum

Start/Finish

Dalrigh car park which is about one mile south of Tyndrum on the A 82. Dalrigh is clearly signed from the main road. The car park is free and fairly large although as it lies on the West Highland Way and is the usual starting point for Ben Dubchraig, Ben Oss and Ben Lui, it can be quite busy.

Distance/Time

9 km      About 4 hours

Peaks

Fiarach, 652 m, NN 344 261. OS sheet 50.

Introduction

Fiarach is a small interesting hill which lies to the W of the A 82 between Crianlarich and Tyndrum. It gives excellent views of the surrounding hills including Ben More, Stob Binnein, Cruach Ardrain, An Caisteal, Ben Lui, Beinn Chuirn, Beinn Dorain, Beinn Odhar, Beinn Chaorach and Ben Challum with more distant hills also visible on a clear day. In thick weather, this hill is quite difficult to navigate so save it for a good day to enjoy the views. It is a good hill to ascend in late winter/early spring conditions.

Route

(1) From the car park, take the track/old tarmac road SE to a metal gate – there are steps down to this track from the far end of the car park. Go through the gate and follow the track to the old bridge. Cross the river then take the rough track to the right, heading W in front of the obvious wood. Just after the track crosses the railway, leave it and head SSE up the obvious slopes. After about 2 km, reach Lochan Fiarach. A fence, coming in from the NW passes this lochan on its W side. This fence can be followed almost all the way to the summit. It meets two other fences, forming an arrow head (or webbed foot) about 30 m from the summit. The “arrow head” points at the summit which is above the small outcrop then about 30 m along a gentle ridge.

(2) Return the same way.
