Sron a' Chlachain from Killin

Start/Finish

McLaren Hall (free) car park at the eastern end of Killin village. If full, other parking is easily found.

Distance/Time

5 km   About 2 - 3 hours

Peaks

Sron a' Chlachain, 521 m, NN 558 328. OS Sheet 51.

Introduction

Sron a' Chlachain isn't a hill in its own right but actually the eastern end of a long ridge which meanders west for about 10 km. Nonetheless it is an excellent viewpoint for Loch Tay and the surrounding hills, especially the Tarmachan Ridge, and sees more visitors than many of the higher hills around it. A reasonable path leads up from the McLaren Hall car park.

Route

(1) From the McLaren Hall car park, walk around the building to gain the playing fields. Bear left, past the swings, etc, and follow a path towards the houses which leads to a gate where the path up Sron a' Chlachain starts. However, before going through the gate, make a short, 20 m, detour left to reach Fingal's Stone. Return to the gate and follow the path uphill to soon reach woodland where the path continues before emerging onto the open hill. Continue following the path which gradually becomes fainter as the crags are approached. The path picks its way up on the left of the crags to soon follow an old stone wall which leads to a large cairn after a right turn. Note that there is a lower cairn by the path and another on the left side of the wall. The large cairn is the summit of Sron a' Chlachain, 521 m.

(2) Retrace the outward route.
