Introduction

This walk gives good views of Creag Meagaigh, the Loch Lochy Munros and beyond. The route uses good tracks and paths for most of the way but be careful with navigation in the peaty watershed bealach between the 2 corbetts and around the summit area of the N Carn Dearg. In good visibility, navigation is easy.

Route

(1) From the end of the public road in Glen Roy, continue along the track past Braeroy Lodge to Turret Bridge. Take the immediate left track after crossing the bridge to a sheep fank. Continue on a path which passes the chimney remains of an old house and cross a small flat bridge over the Allt Eachach. Beyond a stone walled sheep enclosure, 2 paths can be seen. Take the upper path which gradually climbs the Gleann Eachach at an easy angle crossing each gully almost effortlessly. Peat hags appear just before the watershed. Follow the stream, just before the peat hags, upwards in a N direction then climb easy grassy slopes to the large summit cairn of Carn Dearg N, 817 m, which is set back over a shallow hollow behind a slightly lower top. This could be confusing in poor visibility. In thick mist, it might be easier to head for the shallow bealach, containing peat hags, at NN 354 964 then head NW to the summit.

(2) Retrace to watershed in Gleann Eachach and climb S up easy grasy slopes to the prominent cairn of Carn Dearg S, 768 m, which is also set back slightly.

(3) From the summit, head SW down easy slopes using the odd faint path, aiming for Turret Bridge to eventually join the outer track back to Turret Bridge and the start.
