Hallin Fell from Martindale Church

Hallin Fell from Martindale Church

Start/Finish

Car parking spaces opposite Martindale Church on the eastern side of Ullswater. From Pooley Bridge, at the N end of Ullswater, take the road S signposted Howtown & Martindale. In places, this road is very narrow with passing places so you may need to reverse if you meet another car! Continue past Howtown then climb to the top of the low pass – lots of tight bends – to the E of Hallin Fell where there is some parking. Please do not park where you may irritate local residents.

Introduction

This is a lovely short walk. There are good and very distinctive paths all of the way. On a clear day, there are extensive views especially to Loadpot Hill, Steel Knotts, Arthur's Pike, Bonscale Pike, The Nab, Beda Fell and Place Fell as well as further hills such as High Raise and Rest Dodd. Across Ullswater, much of the Great Dodd range will be seen on a clear day as well as Gowbarrow (almost directly across the lake) and Great and Little Mell Fells.

Route

(1) Walk just past the car parking area towards Martindale. A wide grassy path, on the right, will be very obvious which leads up Hallin Fell and ends between its two summits: a small cairn on the left and an unmistakeable high obelisk, on the right, which marks the summit of Hallin Fell, 388 m.

(2) Retrace the outward route or try one of the many alternative paths on the way down.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 5th December, 2013.
