Dumgoyne

Dumgoyne from Glencoyne Distillery

Start/Finish

Glencoyne Distillery. Walkers are not allowed to park in the distillery car park but there is a small lay by just to the north, an even smaller one to the south and a larger, grassy (sometimes muddy) one a little further south. Glencoyne Distillery lies on the A81between Aberfoyle and Strathblane and is about 0.5 miles south of the junction of the A81 with the A875. This walk can be very popular in the summer so arrive early to get a parking space.

Distance/Time

Peaks

Dumgoyne, 427 m, NS 541 827.     OS sheet 64.

Introduction

This is a low but very distinctive peak which has a short but steep ascent from the south side of Glencoyne Distillery. There is no access to the hill through the distillery grounds. The hill is quite exposed and can be quite unnerving in strong winds and/or winter conditions. There is an abundance of paths. There are good views in all directions including the hills around the southern end of Loch Lomond.

Route

(1) On the south side of the distillery and before an obvious wood is a mowed field which has a stile giving access to the path up the hill. Follow the wide grassy path uphill. Cross a track. Higher up, two small stiles in quick succession give access to the open hillside. Continue up with a choice of paths. Soon the gradient increases. Higher up, there are more path choices with the easiest one trending right then left up a ridge to a small plateau where a large standing boulder (installed by helicopter) marks the summit of Dumgoyne, 427 m.

(2) Retrace the ascent route although using different paths can provide some variation.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 28th January, 2015.

(b) Other routes in this area are outlined in The SMC “Corbetts” book. This is an excellent book and well worth buying as, besides the Corbetts, it also contains routes up selected lower peaks.
