Beinn Liath Mhor a' Ghiubhais Li from NW end of Loch Glascarnoch

Start/Finish

Rough small car park on the W side of the A835 Inverness to Ullapool road at the NW end of Loch Glascarnoch. The car park is just N of an obvious bridge after a small wood on the right (loch side).

Distance/Time

7 km.     About 3 – 4 hours.

Peaks

Beinn Liath Mhor a' Ghiubhais Li, 766 m, NH 281 713.      OS sheet 20.

Introduction

This is a short walk which may leave time for another. The middle section of the route is quite wet, mossy and boggy and is best kept for a dry spell. On a clear day, there are fine views of the Fannaichs and the Beinn Dearg range. There is a stream crossing on the approach track which may be awkward in a wet spell.

Route

(1) Walk back, S, along the road to reach the start of a track signed for Beinn Liath Mhor (a different mountain). This goes through a natural wood and crosses a stream. Higher up, it levels out and, between, wooded sections, there is a rough ATV track, cairned, which goes off left and uphill. Follow this; it can be very boggy until it fades out on a peaty shoulder to the NW of the hill. From here, pick a way up drier slopes which are grassy and stony but steeper. Reach more level ground where there is a very wide but low cairn and, a little further, a shelter cairn. It is difficult to tell which is the higher but one is obviously the summit of Beinn Liath Mhor a' Ghiubhais Li, 766 m.

(2) Retrace the outward route.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 19th June, 2015, and about ten years previously.

(b) If you don't mind the driving, Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club site is well placed for access to Glen Arric, Loch Mullardoch, Glen Strathfarrar, Strathconon, Ben Wyvis, Achnasheen, Kinlochewe. Fannaichs, Loch Glascarnoch, Beinn Dearg range and lower hills on the coast. The site is virtually midge free. It pays to be a member otherwise there are surcharges. There is an over 50's discount outside of the High Season. Electrical hook ups are possible for campers. Dingwall has a 24 hour Tesco.
