Introduction

Shutlingsloe is a distinctive peak in these parts and some refer to it as “The Cheshire Matterhorn”. It is very accessible and there are many circular walks which include. However, many will simply want to get to the summit and back so this is the shortest approach and return. It is best saved for a clear day to enjoy the views but, on a misty day, navigation is very straighforward on an easy to follow path although this has one short boggy section. This route has only been walked in the outward direction but as the return is the same route, there should be no unexpected problems!

Route

(1) Walk out of the car park to the T junction and take the track signed for Shutlingsloe on a good track. Soon, another track forks off left. Take this, which soon becomes a grassy path, and follow it up on to the crest of Buxtor's Hill. The path continues S, crossing some wet ground where cattle often graze, to reach the slabbed path which leads up to the trig point which marks the summit of Shutlingsloe, 506 m.

(2) Retrace the outward route back to the car park enjoying the views across the main road to Shining Tor.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 19th November, 2015.
