Ling Fell from near Eskin

Ling Fell from near Eskin

Start/Finish

Small parking spot, holds about 4 cars, near Eskin. From Wythop Mill crossroads, take the minor road signed for Wythop Hall. After about half a mile, a minor road goes right and uphill. Ignore this and continue a little way, towards a gate on the road, and reach the parking spot, on the left. Wythop Mill is about half a mile from the A66 at Netherscale. This is a much quicker approach than taking the longer minor road past the Pheasant Inn.

Introduction

Ling Fell is a fell of modest height above Wythop Mill. It gives good views to Broom Fell, Grisedale Pike, Skiddaw and Sale Fell which can be separately climbed from the same starting point. There are several paths and many routes are possible. For its height, the hill is quite exposed to any bad weather coming off the Irish Sea.

Route

(1) From the junction just before the car parking spot, walk up the minor road which is moderately steep. At the top there is a T junction. Turn right and soon reach a gate which gives access to a track – essentially a left fork off the road. Go through the gate for a short distance. The track continues ahead and there is another track which is a reverse left fork. Between the two tracks is a path going directly uphill. Follow this, it is moderately steep and, being short grass, can be slippery when wet. Pass a large cairn then another cairn before the path ends at a more obvious path. Go left and follow this to the trig point which marks the summit of Ling Fell, 373 m. Note the descent path going left, SE, from the trig point.

(2) Follow the major grassy path roughly SE not the minor path heading more to the E. This major path is easily followed down and is less steep than the ascent path. Lower down it reaches a good track just before a wall. Go left and follow this back to the track junction just inside the gate on the outward route. Retrace back along the road to the start.
