Monamenach from Glen Isla

Monamenach from Glen Isla

Start/Finish

Rough car park at the end of Glen Isla which is a little way down a rough track on the right at the end of the public road. Glen Isla is off the B951 which connects Kirriemuir to the A93 just to the south of the Spittal of Glenshee. Unfortunately, the signs don't say Glen Isla so look for Auchavan.

Distance/Time

5 km.    About 2 – 3 hours.

Peaks

Monamenach, 807 m, NO 176 707. OS sheet 43.

Introduction

This is a very straightforward walk with good views. There is a track or path all the way to the summit although it is moderately steep in places. From the summit, one can see up to the head of Glen Isla, Creag Leacach, Glas Maol, Duchray Hill and Mount Blair.

Route

(1) Return to the road then take the track past Auchavan. Leave it very soon to head uphill rather than along the glen. Follow the track uphill until the gradient eases. A lesser track goes off to the right, after the obvious fence, and goes all the way up to the medium cairn which marks the summit of Monamenach, 807 m. The cairn is by the fence junction.

(2) Retrace the outward route.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 2nd September, 2016, and about 12 years earlier.
