Badandum Hill from Glen Isla

Badandum Hill from Glen Isla

Start/Finish

Verge parking at start of track to Fergus in Glen Isla. The track starts just after a small plantation which is just after a red telephone box. It might be possible to park a little way down the track on the right. The verges may be too soft in wet weather! Glen Isla is off the B951 which connects Kirriemuir to the A93 just to the south of the Spittal of Glenshee. Unfortunately, the signs don't say Glen Isla so look for Auchavan.

Distance/Time

8 km. About 3 – 4 hours.

Peaks

Badundun Hill, 740 m, NO 207 678. OS sheets 43 & 44 (both needed).

Introduction

Even though it is on the edge of two OS sheets this is a very straightforward walk with good views especially to Monamenach, Creag Leacach and Glas Maol. There is a track or path all the way to the summit.

Route

(1) Walk up the track to Fergus then take the uphill track towards the wood. Follow the track up. After about 3 km, and after passing a track forking off to the right, it passes to the left, W, of Craig Lair summit which is worth the short detour to the obvious summit cairn. Descend SSW, to meet the track whose start was passed earlier. Follow this track towards Badandum Hill. After it starts to climb, a rougher track goes off right to climb the hill. Follow this up to the broad featureless plateau. The track passes to the left of the trig point. A cairn is about 30 m further and it is difficult to tell which is the higher but one of them is the summit of Badundun Hill, 740 m.

(2) Retrace the outward route or drop down moderately steep but easy grassy slopes, heading roughly N to meet the outward track.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 4th September, 2016, and about 12 years earlier.
