Sgurr nan Eugallt from Coireshubh near Kinloch Hourn

Sgurr nan Eugallt from Coireshubh near Kinloch Hourn

Start/Finish

Near to the ruinied cottage of Coireshubh about a mile to the east of Kinloch Hourn which is the end of the 22 mile long road which leaves the A87 road to Skye a few miles west of Invergarry. Invergarry is about 25 miles north of Fort William on the A82 road to Inverness. The road is not too bad until the end of Loch Quoich but after that it gradually deteriorates. After passing Loch Quoich and starting to descend towards Kinlochourn, look to park at Loch Coire Shubh which is the second and larger of two lochans on the right of the road. The ruin is just after a stone humped back bridge and opposite a small wood.

Distance/Time

8 km.     About 5 hours.

Peaks

Sgurr nan Eugallt, 894 m, NG 930 045.      OS sheet 33.

Introduction

This walk has a stalker's path from the start and this now goes further than shown on the map, in fact, all the way to the summit which is about 600 m west of the trig point. On a clear day, there are excellent views to Slat Bheinn, Sgurr a' Choire-bheithe, Ladhar Bheinn, Buidhe Bheinn, Sgurr na Sgine, Sgurr a' Mhaoraich and even to Eigg and the Skye Cuillin.

Route

(1) The stalker's path starts just to the west of the ruin and is grassy to start with. Follow it up, going mainly W, then turning SSW to traverse below Sgurr Dubh. It starts to get fainter in places before zig-zagging up to the crest, just to the S of the col after Sgurr Dubh, where a line of old fence posts is joined and can be followed before they go off left. The path is now more obvious and follows the ridge which soon steepens and leads to the trig point. Follow the undulating, and confusing in mist, terrain down then up, for about 600 m, to the small cairn on a small outcrop which is the summit of Sgurr nan Eugallt, 894 m.

(2) Retrace the outward route.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 11th October, 2016, and once before.
