Lady Booth Clough, Kinder Edge & Ringing Roger from Nether Booth

Lady Booth Clough, Kinder Edge & Ringing Roger from Nether Booth

Start/Finish

Rough roadside parking at Nether Booth which, coming from Hope, is on the Edale road about 3 miles from Hope and about two miles short of Edale. The turn off for Edale from Hope, from The Hathersage to Castleton road, A625, is not that obvious and easy to miss. It is a right turn opposite a church on the left on the eastern end of Hope. If coming from the west, it is possible to come over the road between Mam Tor and Rushup Edge then pass Edale village.

Distance/Time

6 km.    About 3 - 4 hours.

Peaks

No peaks as such as most of this walk is on ridges and edges.

Introduction

This is a short and, in places, pleasant walk which ascends the rarely visited Lady Booth Clough, follows a short section of the Kinder Edge path then descends the pleasant, easy rocky ridge of Ringing Roger. Lady Booth Clough is quite narrow; there is a path but it is often wet and slippery and is not recommended in descent. Views include the Losehill to Mam Tor ridge, Win Hill and beyond. It is an ideal walk for a clear winter's day. In summer, ferns may be a problem in Lady Booth Clough.

Route

(1) From Nether Booth, walk a few metres towards Edale, W, then take the minor road signposted for the Youth Hostel. Follow this up and pass the hostel on its right to reach a stile for open country – do not cross the brook. Continue up the often boggy and slippery path, keeping the stream on your right. Try to keep going straight ahead and especially avoid going off to the right higher up (you will find a red marked post if you do!). Higher up the ground steepens but a path can still be followed until it goes into the heather. This is not too dense and within another 100 m, the lower edge path on Kinder is reached.

(2) Turn left and follow the obvious path. When a broken wall is crossed, there is the option of following the wall to the higher path then walking west to meet Ringing Roger higher up. Continue on the lower path. In clear weather a large cairn will be seen then others to its left. The path passes between the cairns and below a fenced off area. Follow the cairns downhill on the S ridge of Ringing Roger, roughly S, and pick up one of many paths with the main path being well over to the right, below the crest. There are many opportunities to look at some interestingly shaped rocks. Continue down, either staying on the crest or following the main path until a few large stones are reached on the crest. Go left just before these and follow a grassy path, in a shallow groove which descends ENE into Ollerbrook Clough. It then follows the clough down before cutting back just before a gate to cross the stream. It then becomes a wide grassy path which contours around the side of the hill, heading roughly E. The path is good until it reaches a small gate after which it becomes narrow and slippery. Keep looking down to the right for a better path and as soon as it is spotted, drop down easy slopes, for about 100 m, to join it and follow it back to the Youth Hostel then walk down the minor road back to Nether Booth.
