Introduction

The North Yorkshire Moors covers a large area and is mainly moorland, ridges and a few distinctive peaks, none of which rise to even 400 m. Roseberry Topping is probably the most distinctive peak as it is not part of a ridge. It is well seen from the A172 near Stokesley. This is about the shortest circuit to Roseberry Topping. The direct return, via Roseberry lane is very muddy with sticky and slippery clay. Views from the summit are excellent.

Route

(1) Walk to the SW corner of the car park and go over the stile. Follow a faint path by the edge of a field with the road just the other side of the hedge on the right. Follow the path until one has to join the road just before the bridge over the railway. Continue along the road for about 400 m then take the obvious track on the left. Follow the track which crosses the railway before entering Newton Wood. Soon after, take the path which forks off left and follow this up, ignoring another left fork further on. Emerge from the wood by an iron viewing frame by a kissing gate where there is a very good view of Roseberry Topping. Don't go through the kissing gate but drop down and follow the path roughly N and just in the trees. Emerge from the trees below the shooting lodge. The path passes to the left of the shooting lodge which can easily be visited. Continue up with the path which heads to the right of Roseberry Topping. Look for a path on the left which leaves the main path and climbs quite steeply but without difficulty to reach the crest close to the trig point which marks the summit of Roseberry Topping, 320 m.

(2) Descend NE, initially steeply with some easy rocky steps, to reach a path which continues down to reach Newton Wood almost at its N end where there is a bench. Turn right and descend a greasy path to reach the top of some steps. Descend these or continue ahead to loop around them then walk down the muddy Roseberry Lane back to the start.
