Introduction

This is a pleasant walk which offers good views from the summit to Lochnagar, Mount Keen, Mount Battock and Cat Law. The route takes in the welcoming Loch Wharral (Worrall) bothy which is open to walkers outside of use by the estate.

Route

(1) Follow the track which starts on the W side of Adielinn Plantation. Higher up, it becomes a path which becomes quite faint further on but one is quite close to the track heading for Rough Crag by now. Gain this track then go right and cross a ford before turning left on to the track for Loch Wharral. Follow this up. It steepens for a while. Stay with this track and reach the Loch Wharral/Worral bothy just before the loch with the Craigs of Loch Wharral looming large across the loch. The bothy is large and has a table to sit at if one wishes to escape the elements. From the bothy, head up the W ridge to intersect the path higher up. When the angle eases, reach a series of scattered cairns which lead one NE across the plateau to reach the low shelter cairn containing a low trig point which is the summit of Ben Tirran, 896 m. There is a fence and stile about 40 m past the summit.

(2) Retrace the outward route via the bothy or stay on the path and rejoin the track lower down.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 13th April, 2017, and about 15 years earlier.

(b) An alternative start, which adds less than 1 km, is from Wheen where the main track to Loch Wharral actually starts.
