Beinn nan Ramh from Kinlochewe

Beinn nan Ramh from Kinlochewe

Start/Finish

Incheril car park which is signed off the A832 road about 0.5 miles east of the junction in Kinlochewe. There is usually plenty of room to park but late starters may struggle on busy days!

Distance/Time

12 km bike + 12 km walk.     About 6 hours.

Peaks

Beinn nan Ramh, 711 m, NH 139 662.

OS sheet 19: Gairloch & Ullapool (the summit is just about on this map)

Introduction

This is a fairly straightforward walk although it does cross some wet and boggy ground so is best attempted in a dry spell. It is an easy uphill cycle to Leckie and one can freewheel most of the way back. The final 3 km to the summit is over rough ground and seems to go on for longer than it should until the summit plateau is finally reached. There are good views to Slioch, Fionn Bheinn and most of the Fannaichs with A' Chailleach and Sgurr Breac being most prominent to the north.

Route

(1) Come out of the car park and turn left on to the track. Follow this for about 6 km to the old disused cottage at Leckie which is where the track used to terminate but it now goes a little further because of ongoing hydro scheme works. Leave bikes at Leckie. The path is not that obvious but is level to begin with before starting to climb. Most of it is grassy which means it is faint in places. It continues past its high point and descends almost to the westerly stream draining the large grassy corrie. Continue and cross the stream by a gravel patch about a 100 m above a stream confluence. This is useful to remember for the return. Cross the second stream and go up easy but featureless slopes roughly ENE. This part of the walk seems to go on forever! Eventually reach the summit plateau and keep going to reach a small squat like cairn which is the summit of Beinn nan Ramh, 711 m.

(2) Retrace the outward route.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 11th May, 2017, and about 15 years earlier.
