2019

Having compiled a blog for the last few years, it hasn't been particularly enjoyable and very much like a chore so, in 2019, it will be even more downsized than in 2018!

Mid January Glossop

On 14/1, set off from Bowden Bridge (Hatfield) to foot of William Clough then around part of Kinder Reservoir before following River Kinder as far as Red Brook which was then followed up to the main edge path. Followed this to Kinder Downfall then left it soon after for Mermaid's Pool then down to River Kinder. Returned via Blackshaws and Upper Moor.  On 15/1, set off from Fairbrook and followed River Ashop then Snake Path to Pennine Way before ascending to Kinder and following its north edge to Fairbrook Naze then down the nose and back to start.  On 17/1, parked near Reap's Farm on the Torside road and had a pleasant circuit taking in Lad's Leap and some of the north side of Longdendale.  On 18/1, started on A628 and ascended track up side of wood past old quarries to Lad's Leap then returned across the top of the quarries.  On 19/1, headed for home with a short walk below and above Birchen Edge on the way.

Late January Skipton

On 28/1, headed for Pen-y-Ghent and walked from where the Pennine way meets the Stainforth to Halton Gill road then followed the Pennine Way up the south shoulder of Pen-y-Ghent, returning the same way.  On 29/1, snow disruption prevented access to any meaningful walk. On 30/1, walked from Malham to Malham Cove and around Malham Tarn in fairly snowy conditions.  On 31/1, went back to near Malham Tarn House to complete the section of Pennine Way from Malham to Tennant Gill.

Early February Glossop

On 5/2, set off from A628 above Valehouse Reservoir and took path to Tintwistle before taking track and path to Tintwistle Knarr then on to Millstone Rocks and Lad's Leap before returning via the quarries. This will be the 1000thwalk uploaded to the website.  On 6/2, drove to Tennant Gill, north of Malham Tarn, to fill in a section of the Pennine Way from there to the Stainforth to Halton Gill road known as Silverdale Road.  On 8/2, went up Kinderlow End in a vicious gale then continued to Edale Rocks, Swine's Head and Edale Cross before retruning down Oaken Clough.  On 9/2, headed for home with a short and pleasant walk below and above Baslow Edge.

Late February Yorkshire Dales

On 26/2, set off from Hawes to ascend Great Shunner Fell via the Pennine Way. Good views and unseasonably warm!  On 27/2, drove to Hawes, got bus to Garsdale station then train to Horton-in-Ribblesdale then walked back to Hawes on the Pennine Way.  On 28/2, drove to Thwaite then ascended Great Shunner Fell via the Pennine Way. A shortish walk leaving plenty of time for a stop at the Tan Hill Inn before driving home.

Mid March Glossop

On 11/3, thwarted in the Yorkshire Dales by snowed up roads. Returned on 12/3, to climb Fountains Fell from the Halton Gill road then had time to drive over to Wharfedale to walk up Conistone Dib to Conistone Pie.  On 13/3, headed for Worston, near Clitheroe, and ascended Pendle Hill from the north on a very windy day.  On 14/3, ascended Blackden Brook, walked along Seal Edge then descended Fair Brook on quite a blustery day.

Late March Grinton Lodge, Swaledale

A very cosy youth hostel. On 24/3, walked from the A66 to near Needless Bridge on the Pennine Way. Quite rough and wet ground with blustery winds and showers. On 25/3, got bus from Keld to Thwaite then walked the Pennine Way to Tan Hill before walking back to Keld on the road. A bike would have been handy!  On 26/3, set off from Pasture End on A66 and alked to the Tan Hill Inn and back. Very wet and mossy in places. Only posted return route in Pennine Way section.  On 27/3, parked at Langdon Beck Hotel, got the bus to Middleton-in-Teesdale then walked up the Pennine Way to Caudron Snout then back by track and road from Cow Green Reservoir to Langdon Beck.  On 28/3, drove to Cow Green car park and walked to High Cup Nick and back.  On 29/3, got a taxi to near Needless Bridge then walked to Middleton-in-Teesdale on the Pennine Way. More up and down than expected.

Early April Alston

Booked into Alston YHA for 5 nights. En route, walked to High Cup Nick from Dufton to obtain more photos of the return route. Reached Alston with enough time to walk to Garrigill then return on the Pennine Way. Death by Stiles is an understatement!  On 8/4, walked from Garrigill to Cross Fell. Much of the way is a very long and tedious track, probably the most tedious section of the Pennine Way.  On 9/4, walked from Alston to the Glendue Burn on a tortuous meandering route with very poor signage before walking back along the Tynedale trail to Slaggyford then catching the train (restored railway) back to Alston.  On 10/4, walked from Glendue Burn to Greenhead over slow and boggy ground. Plan was to get a bus to Haltwhistle then another back to the start but no bus timetables on any bus stop just phone numbers which didn't work! Eventually managed it!  On 11/4, walked Hadrian's Wall from Greenhead to where it turns north just before Housesteads. This is a very undulating wlak with more ups and owns than any other route I have ever walked!

Early May North Ireland

Initially based in Attical at the very nice Mourne Lodge – an upmarket hostel. On 7/5, ascended Eagle Mountain and Shanlieve.  On 8/5, trying to find the best weather, drove over to the west coast for an ascent of Truskmore and Tievebaun Mountain.  On 9/5, ascended Slieve Meelbeg and Slieve Meelmore then almost reached the summit of Slieve Bearnagh which seems to on a large granite tor. On 10/5, ascended Slieve Muck, Carn Mountain and Slieve Loughshannagh in rain, hail and snow!! On 11/5, had a good day over Slieve Commedagh, Slieve Donard and Chimney Rock Mountain. On 12/5, set off from Meelmore Lodge to ascend Slieve Bearnagh and, this time, made it to the summit!  On 13/5, started in the Silent Valley and climbed Slieve Binnian which has the most tors of any mountain in the Mournes.  On 14/5, ascended Slievelamagan and Cove Mountain from the Silent Valley.  On 15/5, drove past Enniskillen and ascended Cuilcagh by track, boardwalks and mountain path.  On 16/5, parked at top of Tamnagh Pass, walked up Dart Mountain and Sawel Mountain then walked up Mullaghclogha on the other side of the pass.  On 17/5, walked up Mullaghaneany and Meenard Mountain from Glenedra Bridge.  On 20/5, ascended Slieve Binnian from Carrick Little which is much easier than from the Silent Valley.

Late May   Fort William

On 27/5, walked the east coast of the Isle of Muck. On 28/5, walked some of the north coast of the Isle of Muck.  On 29/5, walked the north and west coasts of Muck and ascended Beinn Airein, the highest point on the island.

Late June   Nottinghamshire

On 20/6, had a very gentle walk from Hayton to Clayworth then back along the Chesterfield Canal. Definitely not mountainous and hardly hilly!

Early July    Donegal

Based in Derry/Londonderry for the final 10 Irish mountains in and around Donegal. On 3/7, ascended Slieve Snaght in the middle of the Inishowen Peninsula.  On 4/7, drove to the isolated Reelan Valley to ascend Lavagh Beg & Lavagh More.  On 5/7, ascended Dooish from the top of the R251 to the east of Errigal. Thick mist meant little was seen and the ground was very rough.  On 6/7 ascended the eastern Bluestack Mountains of Croaghbann, Ardnageer and Bluestack. Very tough going. On 7/7, ascended Slieve Snaght from Dunlewy using a route which avoided the boggy ground by the Devlin River.  On 9/7, ascended Muckish from the R256 on the best path of the trip so far but saw very little owing to thick mist.  On 10/7, ascended Errigal on a poor path in mist but had some good views in descent.  On 11/7, made another ascent of Muckish by the same route and in similar poor weather. On 13/7, made an ascent of Dooish in clear weather.  On 14/7, ascended Muckish via the Miner's Path which is the best mountaineering route in the area.  On 15/7, made a repeat ascent of Errigal in much better weather. On 16/7, visited the world famous Giants Causeway and have uploaded some of the photos.

Late July North Pennines

On 28/7, drove to end of Coquet Valley then walked Pennine Way from Chew Green to Windy Gyle before descending to the Coquet Valley then a long walk back to the start.

Mid September North Pennines

On 18/9, walked from Kirk Yetholm to The Schil and Auchope Mountain Refuge Hut using the low and high level versions of the Pennine Way. On 19/9, walked from Byrness to Chew Green on the Pennine Way and used part of the border County Ride for the return.

Early October North Pennines

With a very sore knee, on 2/10, walked from Housesteads below Hadrian's Wall to pick up the Pennine Way and then followed it north to Ladyhill Farm Falconry. Boggy opem moorland and even worse in the forests. With an even more sore knee, on 3/10, walked from Ladyhill Farm Falconry to Bellingham. Boggy open moorland but no forestry!

Mid October North Pennines

Still suffering with a sore knee, drove up to finish the Pennine Way. On 15/10, arrived early enough to walk from Forest Drive to Byrness to and back again so reducing the rest of the walking! On 16/10, walked from Bellingham to the Highgreen Manor road on mainly rough, wet and boggy ground. On 17/10, walked from the Highgreen Manor road to the Forest Drive car park. This completed all sections of the Pennine Way.

Mid November Glossop

On 11/11, walked the Longdendale Trail from Padfield to Torside and back.  On 12/11, walked the rest of the Longdendale Trail from Torside to the Woodhead tunnels.

Mid December Glossop

On 9/12, went for a wander up the south west ridge of James Thorn then down through Shelf Benches. On 11/12, went for a similar vague wander. On 12/12, parked at the top of Monk's Road and walked along Cown Edge then back along Coombes Edge (above Charlesworth).

Mid December Melrose

On 17/12, had a pleasant walk over the three peaks of the Eildon Hills.

Cycle Rides
During November and December, explored a few cycle routes from Skellingthorpe near Lincoln which took in the sustransd track over the long Trent Viaduct, Fledborough, Normanton, High Marnham, Harby, Wigsley, Eagle, Eagle Moor and Doddington Hall.  Hardly a hill in sight!
