The City of Lincoln is well known for its history which dates back to Medieval and Roman times as well as its magnificent cathedral, castle and other historic buildings.  The Romans actually built a canal, the Foss Dyke, from Lincoln to the River Trent at Torksey.  Perhaps less obvious, even to some local residents, are the number of outdoor amenities.  Prominent amongst these are the adjoining Hartsholme Country Park and Swanholme Lakes which offer walks up to 5 miles long and an abundance of wildlife.  Many outsiders perceive Lincolnshire to be flat.  It is but on two levels!  Nowhere is this more obvious than in the City of Lincoln itself where it can be quite a steep climb from lower Lincoln to upper Lincoln.  Indeed one of the connecting roads is actually called "Steep Hill" and is steeper than some ski slopes!  The Romans were noted for building straight roads irrespective of gradient but there is some evidence to suggest that they zig-zagged up from lower Lincoln to upper Lincoln.  Lincoln is also know for its commons.  Descending from the Cathedral Quarter to lower Lincoln and the River Witham, the land rises up again above South Common.  A path goes along this edge givng panoramic views of the city.
