Green Quarter Fell from Kentmere

Green Quarter Fell from Kentmere

Start/Finish

Parking spaces near Kentmere Church. On busy days, this “car park” will fill up very early. It is quietest mid-week out of season but even so can still fill up by 9 am as there are so few spaces available. In Summer, a field may be opened for extra parking but there is no way of knowing when this will happen. From Staveley, between Kendal and Windermere on the A591, follow the signs for Kentmere. The road is quite narrow and is used by heavy lorries.

Introduction

This fell of modest height offers excellent views especially into the Kentmere Horseshoe. Much of the approach and return is on a good path or track but the section before and after the summit is, strictly, not on a right of way although no great attempt has been made to keep walkers out.

Route

(1) Walk back along the road from the church and cross over the river. Immediately, turn left up a minor road. After about 150 m, cross a stile on the right and follow the faint path up the field to reach some houses on another minor road. Go left. In about 50 m, take the reverse fork on to a signed track. This is the start of the track which goes around the S flank of Green Quarter Fell. Follow the track for about 2 km. Just after an old ruin, there is a crossroads of paths. Take the left one, roughly N. Continue to the gate hole in the next wall then to the next gate in a barbed wire fence. This gate does open so the fence does not have to be climbed over. Follow a path/track which initially shadows the wall then heads more to the NNW. The faint path leads to a small standing stone which seems to mark the summit of Green Quarter Fell, 426 m.

(2) Continue on the path, roughly N. It soon fades but continue down to a barbed wire fence. This has to be climbed over but it is not too high. Continue down trending more to the NW and reach the right of way path coming from Longsleddale. Follow this, roughly SW, to the top of a tarmac road by some holiday cottages. Go down this to reach a junction. Turn right and soon reach a footpath over a stone stepped stile on the left. Climb over and follow the path down to another tarmac road. Turn left and walk down to the “main” road by the bridge in Kentmere. Turn right and walk back to the church.
