You are here: England » Lake District » Outlying Fells

This section is based on Wainwright's "The Outlying Fells of Lakeland".

Each walk is followed by the area it falls in.  For example (S) means the Southern Fells and (FE) means the Far Eastern Fells.  Wainwright's seven sections have had to be extended somewhat to use these definitions.  Many of the Outlying Fells are near the fringes of the Lake District National Park with one, Humphrey Head, being outside. The Far Eastern Fells (FE) have been extended eastwards to Shap and southwards to Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. many Outlying Fells lie in this extended region.  The Southern Fells have been extended southward to Morecambe Bay and contain many Outlying Fells.  Surprisingly, there is only one Outlying Fell in the Eastern region, (E), (and that's tenuous!), none in the Central region (C) with only a very few in the Northern Fells, (N), North Western Fells, (NW), and Western Fells, (W).

Any route which includes a main Wainwright Fell and an Outlying Fell will be found in the main sections but a note to that effect will be placed in this section.

Gummer's How may be repeated sometime to obtain better photos as the views are very extensive on a clear day.
